Ogun State Asserts Legal Ownership of Oil Discovery at Eba Island Amid Jurisdiction Dispute

The Ogun State government has reiterated its authority over an oil discovery at Eba Island, countering Ondo State's assertions. Special advisers from both states, Allen Sowore and Kayode Akinmade, engaged in a public dispute over the ownership, with Akinmade presenting legal and historical evidence to support Ogun State's claim.

The oil deposit is situated within the Ilaj Local Government Area of Ondo State, historically falling under Atijer native court and later incorporating into Ilaj District Council. Akinmade clarified that Eba Island, where the oil was approved for drilling, falls squarely within Ogun Waterside Local Government Area.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) conducted due diligence before granting clearance for drilling, recognizing Ogun State as the host state. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) also confirms Eba Island as part of Ogun State's administrative jurisdiction.

Ogun State emphasizes adherence to the rule of law, peaceful coexistence, and cooperation with the federal government to safeguard national assets.
