Ogun State Students Discharged After Poisonous Gas Incident

On October 23, 2026, the Ogun State government reported that over 100 students hospitalized due to inhaling poisonous gas emissions have been discharged from medical facilities. The incident occurred on Wednesday, with students treated across Ijebu-Ode, Ijebu-Igbo, and Ago-Iwoye.
The state government confirmed that the gas leak has been brought under control and investigations are underway to identify the source of the emissions. Kayode Akinmade, the special adviser to the Governor on Media and Strategy, stated that an assessment team visited the General Hospital in Ijebu-Ode, where more than 30 students were treated.
The assessment revealed that the odour was also perceived by residents in surrounding communities. Ola Oresanya, the state Commissioner for Environment, attributed previous similar incidents to natural underground gas emissions, ruling out sabotage or gas pipeline leaks.
This incident marks the fourth occurrence of such emissions in Ogun State in 2026.
