Ogun State Government Investigates Gas Emissions Affecting Students

The Ogun State Government is actively investigating unusual gas emissions reported in Ijebu-Ode, Ijebu-Igbo, and Ago-Iwoye, which led to over 100 secondary school students requiring medical attention on Wednesday. The Special Adviser to Governor Dapo Abiodun on Information and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, assured residents that the situation is under control.
Students from schools such as Ijebu-Igbo Girls Grammar School and Anglican Girls Grammar School were hospitalized after inhaling the gas. Symptoms included shortness of breath and stomach disorders.
An assessment team visited the General Hospital, Ijebu-Ode, where more than 30 students were treated. Most students were discharged, while a few remained under observation.
The assessment indicated that the odour was also perceived by residents in nearby communities. The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission has joined the investigation, which has raised concerns due to similar occurrences reported since April 2026.
