Oil Surges Past $100 as US-Iran Military Clashes Intensify

Brent crude climbs above $100 per barrel for first time since July following US strikes on Iranian tankers, driving up fuel costs across Nigeria.

Global crude oil prices breached the $100-per-barrel threshold on Wednesday after military confrontations between the United States and Iran escalated dramatically in the Middle East. The move marks the first time prices have reached this level since late July, with Brent crude—the international benchmark—trading between $100.57 and $101.20 per barrel depending on contract type.

West Texas Intermediate, the US benchmark, hovered near $95–$96 per barrel during the same period. The price spike followed US military operations that destroyed Iranian oil tankers in response to Iranian attacks.

According to reports from US Central Command, American forces targeted multiple Iranian crude carriers after Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launched missile strikes on US positions in Jordan and fired at American warships. The cycle of escalating military action has intensified fears that further disruptions to oil production, shipping, and exports from the Middle East could materialize in coming weeks.

Nigeria, as a major oil-producing nation, stands at an intersection of these global developments. Domestic fuel prices have already climbed, with petrol selling between ₦1,300 and ₦1,400 per litre at retail outlets.

Higher crude prices typically translate to increased government revenue from oil exports but also risk feeding into broader inflationary pressures on the domestic economy if refinery and distribution costs rise. Market analysts, including investment firms such as Goldman Sachs, have projected that oil prices may climb further if the US-Iran standoff continues.

The Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil transit, remains a focal point of concern for traders and energy markets worldwide. As of the latest reports, Brent crude maintained levels above $100 while WTI remained in the mid-$90s per barrel.
