Okocha Reveals Bayern Munich's 1991 Transfer Interest

Austin ‘Jay-Jay’ Okocha disclosed that in 1991, Bayern Munich expressed interest in signing him after he impressed during a youth tournament in Switzerland. At the time, Okocha was 17 years old, and Bayern could not offer him a professional contract due to German regulations requiring players to be at least 18.

Okocha recalled that Bayern made a verbal offer, but he insisted on a written contract to protect himself in case of injury. Following this, he signed with third-tier Borussia Neunkirchen and later moved to Eintracht Frankfurt during the winter transfer window.

Okocha established himself in the Bundesliga, making 90 appearances and scoring 18 goals for Frankfurt before transferring to Fenerbahce in 1996. Reflecting on the missed opportunity with Bayern, Okocha expressed willingness to take the risk of waiting for the club due to its stature as the biggest club in Germany at that time.
