Okonkwo Joins Super Eagles Squad for Madagascar, Guinea-Bissau Clashes

Charlton Athletic announced Monday that goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo will join the Super Eagles for Nigeria's opening matches in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualification campaign. The 24-year-old has been selected by coach Eric Chelle for the Group L encounters against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau later this month.

Okonkwo arrived at Charlton on a season-long loan from Wrexham and has made four appearances for the Championship club since arriving this summer. The goalkeeper, who came through Arsenal's youth development system before loan spells at Crewe Alexandra and Sturm Graz, earned his first two senior caps for Nigeria during the Unity Cup in May, keeping clean sheets in both matches.

The 24-year-old will compete for the starting position with existing Super Eagles goalkeepers Stanley Nwabali and Maduka Okoye. Sources indicate this call-up presents an opportunity for Okonkwo to earn his competitive debut for Nigeria, having previously featured in non-competitive football for the national team.

Okonkwo switched his international allegiance to Nigeria after previously representing England at youth level. His inclusion in the squad reflects the Super Eagles' depth in the goalkeeper position as they begin their quest for qualification to the 2027 continental tournament.
