Okpekpe 10km Race Set for May 2026, Attracts Global Athletes

The Okpekpe International 10km Race, set for May 23, 2026, is generating unprecedented interest from foreign athletes, especially from East Africa, including Kenya and Ethiopia, as well as Europe. Race director Zack Amodu reported a surge in online registrations and inquiries via social media, highlighting the event's status as a World Athletics gold label race.

This prestigious designation, first granted to the Okpekpe race in West Africa in 2015, mandates the selection of top-level runners. Amodu explained that the organization cannot confirm registrations directly with elite athletes without agents, adhering to World Athletics rules.

The race is recognized for its challenging hilly terrain, which has received praise from World Athletics technical delegate Norri Williamson. Former Edo State Governor and current Senator Adam Oshiomhole emphasized the race's significance to the region's sports culture and infrastructure.

The registration deadline for Nigerian athletes has been extended to early next month, encouraging local participation in this globally recognized event.
