Olawepo-Hashim Urges Labor to Defend Democracy in Nigeria

Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, a former presidential candidate and energy entrepreneur, called on Nigeria's organized labor to take a proactive role in safeguarding the nation's democracy. During a visit with Joe Ajaero, the president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), he warned of growing authoritarian tendencies that require vigilance from the working class.

Olawepo-Hashim highlighted the historical significance of labor in shaping Nigeria's democratic trajectory and noted that labor has played a key role in the struggle for independence and the fight against military dictatorship. He stressed the need for political leaders to refocus on people-oriented policies that deliver tangible benefits, particularly for marginalized workers, to maintain the legitimacy of democratic institutions.

Olawepo-Hashim commended the NLC's leadership under Ajaero for its courage and resilience in defending workers' rights amidst increasing pressures. He also emphasized the necessity for stronger collaboration between labor leaders and political actors to deepen democratic values in Nigeria.
