Olawepo-Hashim Urges Tinubu to Delay Primaries to September

Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, a former presidential candidate, has called on President Bola Tinubu and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to shift the timeline for political party primaries to September. In an open letter, Olawepo-Hashim warned that the rush towards early primaries could undermine internal party democracy and weaken the credibility of the upcoming 2027 general elections.

He referenced Section 29(1) of the amended Electoral Act, which allows for a broader window for parties to conduct primaries by mid-September. He argued that adhering to this timeline would enhance transparency and inclusivity in the electoral process.

Olawepo-Hashim expressed concern that the compressed primary election process could lead to disputes within parties and disenfranchisement of aspirants, ultimately diminishing public confidence in the electoral system. He emphasized the importance of safeguarding political pluralism and urged the president to promote reforms that strengthen electoral credibility, ensuring a level playing field for political actors.
