Oluremi Tinubu Calls for Action Against Child Marriage

Oluremi Tinubu, the First Lady of Nigeria, urged for immediate action to combat child marriage, citing it as a significant factor contributing to obstetric fistula, a condition threatening the health and future of women and girls. In her message commemorating the 2026 International Day to End Obstetric Fistula, she stressed the importance of empowering girls through education and ensuring access to quality healthcare services.

Tinubu highlighted that no woman should suffer from conditions that are preventable and treatable. She pointed out that early marriage and pregnancy are leading causes of obstetric fistula, particularly among young girls who are physically unprepared for childbirth.

The First Lady called for collective efforts from the government, communities, and stakeholders to eliminate barriers preventing women and girls from accessing healthcare services. She reiterated the commitment to creating a future where every childbirth is safe, emphasizing that no woman should lose her life during childbirth.
