Reno Omokri, who serves as Nigeria's ambassador-designate to Mexico and formerly held a presidential aide position, has requested that Atiku Abubakar extend an apology to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The reason concerns Atiku's manner of addressing the sitting leader at a recent public event.

During a press conference, the former Vice President repeatedly invoked Tinubu's first name rather than employing his formal title. Omokri conveyed this position through an open letter shared on multiple social media channels.

At the heart of Omokri's message lies a focus on decorum and deference toward the presidency as an institution, distinct from any individual occupant. He asserted that invoking a sitting president's first name alone erodes the stature inherent to that office and, consequently, damages Nigeria's international image.

Furthermore, Omokri expressed worry that such casual reference patterns might establish a troubling norm for younger Nigerians following political exchanges. Omokri's critique drew substantially on historical precedent from electoral contests.

He pointed out that Atiku did not call former President Muhammadu Buhari by his given name throughout their 2019 campaign confrontation. According to Omokri, this variance in formality between a northern predecessor and the current southern president risks fostering impressions of ethnic or regional favoritism, though reporting indicates he framed this as a potential hazard rather than confirmed bias.

Additionally, Omokri brought up Atiku's prior dealings with former President Olusegun Obasanjo, contending that Atiku refrained from using Obasanjo's first name during political interactions. Omokri underscored that upholding formal address conventions reflects a benchmark upheld throughout democratic systems and political rivalries, independent of substantive disagreements regarding policy between competing politicians.
