Ondo State Food Poisoning Death Toll Reaches 30

The reported death toll from suspected food poisoning in Odigbo communities, located in the Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State, has risen to 30, with approximately 50 others receiving treatment in various hospitals. The victims allegedly consumed suspected locally produced alcoholic drinks or herbal concoctions.

The Ondo State Government has initiated an emergency response, with health authorities investigating the incident to determine the cause of the deaths and whether a toxic substance was involved. Dr Banji Ajaka, the Commissioner for Health, stated that preliminary investigations have ruled out viral and bacterial infections.

Residents indicated that some victims may have consumed alcohol mixed with an unidentified substance. Samples of the suspected substance have been collected for laboratory analysis, and blood and urine samples from survivors are being obtained to check for toxic substances.

Post-mortem examinations will also be conducted on some deceased individuals. Ajaka warned residents against consuming unregulated alcoholic mixtures and urged caution until the investigation concludes.
