Ondo VIO Officer Killed by Truck During Routine Inspection in Akure

A 35-year-old Vehicle Inspection Officer was struck and killed by a truck on Hospital Road in Akure after attempting to flag down the vehicle for inspection.

On Friday morning in Akure, Ondo State, a Vehicle Inspection Officer lost his life after being struck by a truck during routine patrols. Adedeji Sesan, 35 years old, was stationed with his team along Hospital Road near Mega Primary School when tragedy struck around 9 a.m.

The officer signaled down a white Mitsubishi van bearing registration AGL 992 XX to conduct standard checks on vehicle particulars, yet the vehicle struck him instead. Sesan fell beneath the truck and suffered fatal injuries to his head.

Witnesses present at the location reported that Sesan tried to halt the truck as it moved through the fast lane, but his efforts proved unsuccessful before impact occurred. Social media circulated video footage captured by Crest FM, an Akure radio broadcaster, depicting the officer pinned beneath the vehicle.

The footage also showed his colleagues and residents nearby expressing shock and distress as the tragedy unfolded before them. Authorities in Ondo State have taken the truck operator into custody.

Ayoade Idowu, a 37-year-old resident of Gbogi Street in Akure, was identified as the driver. Police reports suggest he may have sought to circumvent the standard inspection procedure.

The Command has offered sympathies to Sesan's family members as inquiries into what transpired remain underway. This incident has brought focus to the risks that VIOs encounter while carrying out their work across Nigeria's roads.

The driver's detention signifies the start of formal investigative procedures to establish whether the collision was unintentional or stemmed from intentional avoidance of the vehicle inspection.
