Tinubu Honored Aguiyi-Ironsi 60 Years After Assassination

Rt. Hon. Sam Onuigbo, the former member of the House of Representatives and President of GLOBE Legislators International, commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for honoring Major General Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi-Ironsi, Nigeria’s first military Head of State, 60 years after his assassination on July 29, 2026.

Onuigbo, who represented Aguiyi-Ironsi’s former constituency of Ikwuano/Umuahia North and Umuahia South from 2015 to 2023, expressed his commendation in a letter to the President, stating that Tinubu’s decision demonstrated “deep historical insight and visionary leadership.” He described Aguiyi-Ironsi as a symbol of patriotism and integrity, emphasizing the significance of recognizing his contributions to Nigeria's history. Onuigbo also linked the commemoration to the recent upward review of military personnel salaries, noting that both actions reflect Tinubu's commitment to the welfare of the Armed Forces.

He urged Nigerians to support the Tinubu administration in promoting national unity and patriotism.
