Tinubu Honors General Aguiyi-Ironsi at Memorial Event

On July 29, 2026, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, paid tribute to Nigeria’s first military head of state, Late General Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi-Ironsi, during a 60th Memorial Celebration in Umuahia, Abia State. The tribute was delivered by the Honourable Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd) OFR.

President Tinubu described Aguiyi-Ironsi’s life as a testament to patriotism, discipline, and national unity, highlighting his role as the first Nigerian General Officer Commanding in the Nigerian Army and his brief tenure as military head of state during a critical period in Nigeria's history. The President reaffirmed the government's commitment to national security and democratic institutions, emphasizing the importance of unity and shared values in nation-building.

He expressed sympathy and gratitude to Aguiyi-Ironsi’s family and commended the organizers for preserving the memory of national heroes. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo also spoke at the event, reflecting on Aguiyi-Ironsi’s contributions to the military and Nigeria’s political evolution.
