Taraba Government Denies ₦1.2trn Debt Claims as Fake News

The Taraba State Government has dismissed claims from opposition parties that the state's debt profile stands at ₦1.2 trillion as fake news. Dr.

Serah Adi, the Commissioner for Finance, made this statement on Sunday in Jalingo, urging citizens to disregard the misleading information. According to Dr.

Adi, the claims do not align with the latest records from the Debt Management Office (DMO). She emphasized that the current administration under Governor Agbu Kefas is focused on financial prudence and has successfully reduced the domestic debt from ₦87.96 billion in 2023 to ₦85.51 billion by December 31, 2025.

The external debt has increased slightly from approximately US$46.47 million in 2022 to US$48.04 million in 2025. Dr.

Adi also clarified that financing facilities approved by the Taraba State House of Assembly in 2023, totaling approximately ₦206.78 billion, were structured against designated revenue streams, ensuring fiscal sustainability.
