Senator Adam Oshiomhole of Edo North has retracted earlier assertions that signatures appearing on the disciplinary report targeting Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan constituted forgery. Released on Tuesday, his statement indicated that media coverage during an earlier interview distorted his actual remarks, and he denied making any allegation about fabricated signatures.
At the heart of this dispute lies Akpoti-Uduaghan's half-year removal from the Senate, a sanction the chamber imposed following alleged gross misconduct and rule violations. Different news reports present varying interpretations of what Oshiomhole originally claimed: some sources suggest he alleged that at least three lawmakers had their names attached to the suspension report without authorization or knowledge, whereas other accounts suggest he merely discussed remarks by committee members regarding attendance during signature-collection proceedings.
Through its representative Yemi Adaramodu, the Senate rejected suggestions of improper conduct in this process. According to Adaramodu, the disciplinary action adhered to proper procedure and occurred transparently, with deliberations conducted before the full chamber.
The Senate reaffirmed that Akpoti-Uduaghan breached institutional regulations and received the corresponding penalty. Oshiomhole's subsequent statement stressed that no official grievance regarding forged signatures was presented to the chamber.
He indicated his complete alignment with how the Senate explained events and its management of the situation. The progression from initial claim through subsequent withdrawal occurred over several days during the current week.
