INEC Urges Journalists to Combat Misinformation Ahead of Osun Election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has called on journalists to actively counter misinformation as the August 15, 2026 Osun State governorship election approaches. During a dialogue forum in Osogbo, INEC Commissioner Oluwatoyin Babalola highlighted that misinformation poses a significant threat to electoral credibility.

She urged journalists to verify electoral claims and rely on official INEC information to correct inaccuracies promptly. Babalola stressed that false information could create unnecessary panic, suppress voter turnout, and damage public confidence, potentially leading to tensions.

She also noted that INEC is preparing for the election in accordance with the Electoral Act and has established operational procedures. The commission continues to engage with political parties, security agencies, and civil society organizations to strengthen voter education and ensure a peaceful electoral environment.

Lanre Arogundade from the International Press Centre and Akin Akingbulu from CEMESO also emphasized the importance of civic voter education and fact-checking in the lead-up to the elections.
