EFCC Defends 72-Hour Account Freeze on Osun State

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has justified its decision to restrict an Osun State Government account for 72 hours without a court order, asserting that it acted within its legal authority. Wilson Uwujaren, the EFCC's Director of Public Affairs, explained in an interview with Arise Television that the restriction was prompted by suspicious activities observed over the previous week, including heavy fund transfers to various corporate entities.

Uwujaren clarified that the action was limited to one account and did not imply a complete freeze of the state's finances, as the Osun State Government retains access to other accounts for its operations. He emphasized that the EFCC's mandate requires it to act against potential financial misconduct, especially in light of public scrutiny.

Uwujaren assured that the restriction would be lifted once the account's activities were deemed no longer suspicious, reiterating the commission's legal power to impose such temporary measures.
