Over 500 Generals Forced Into Retirement Under Buhari, Tinubu in Nigeria

The Nigerian military has seen over 500 senior officers retire early between 2015 and 2023 under Presidents Buhari and Tinubu. The mass disengagement aimed to bring in new leadership and maintain discipline and operational efficiency.

Not all figures are independently verified, but the trend of retiring senior officers has continued under the new service chiefs appointed by the administrations. The recent wave of retirements included 51 army generals, 49 air force officers, and 17 naval officers following the appointment of new service chiefs.
