DSS Arrests ISWAP Commander Linked to Owo Church Attack

The Department of State Services (DSS) has apprehended Sani Yusuf, identified as a high-profile commander of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), who had been hiding in a village in Edo State for four years. Yusuf was arrested in Iguosa community, Ovia North Local Government Area, Edo State, after evading capture for an extended period.

He confessed to planning and executing the Owo church massacre and admitted his involvement in other terrorist activities, including the July 2022 attack on the Suleja military barracks and various kidnappings in Kaduna State. Yusuf's arrest is significant as it contributes to the ongoing efforts of the DSS to combat terrorism in Nigeria, particularly following the Owo church attack, which resulted in the loss of 40 lives.

He will join five other suspects already facing prosecution for their alleged roles in the attack.
