Oyedele Critiques Nigerians for Attacking World Bank Loans

On Wednesday in Abuja, Taiwo Oyedele, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, addressed criticisms directed at the World Bank by Nigerians on social media concerning loans provided to Nigeria. He stated that such actions reflected a lack of understanding of economic systems.

Oyedele noted that after receiving backlash, the World Bank disabled comments on its social media account. He used an analogy involving Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) to illustrate the consequences of misunderstanding economic systems, explaining that individuals who do not comprehend how an ATM functions might wrongly assume that the government is favoring certain people in accessing funds.

He warned that without proper knowledge, citizens risk wasting their energy in protests that do not address the underlying issues. Oyedele also cautioned against the manipulation of economic data for political ends, asserting that some individuals would misinterpret the reform scorecard data to serve their interests.
