Oyedele pushes for cheaper borrowing as NNPC cuts petrol prices

Nigeria's Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele demands fair credit ratings while leading global push for affordable developing nation debt as fuel costs ease.
Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele has taken aim at international credit rating agencies for what he characterizes as a failure to recognize improvements in Nigeria's economic performance, a gap he argues directly drives up the nation's borrowing expenses. Oyedele raised the complaint during talks with African Development Bank leadership on the sidelines of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank gatherings in Bangkok this month.
Simultaneously, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited reduced petrol prices at its retail outlets, bringing costs down to N1,370 per litre in Abuja, a decrease of N35 from a weekend peak of N1,405. Lagos prices were positioned at N1,360 per litre.
The adjustment comes after the Finance Minister had proposed standardizing prices at N1,350 per litre, pointing to efforts by government officials to manage fuel costs for consumers. Beyond Nigeria's borders, Oyedele is steering the Intergovernmental Group of 24 in requesting that the International Monetary Fund and World Bank create more affordable lending arrangements for developing economies burdened by rising debt and expensive financing options.
During a media event in Thailand, he underscored the urgency for financial terms that allow vulnerable nations to manage fiscal strain while preserving economic expansion and public services. The Finance Minister's dual focus on credit assessments and borrowing accessibility reflects official recognition that Nigeria's debt servicing challenge extends beyond domestic policy into the realm of international financial architecture.
His positions on rating agencies and concessional finance represent the government's assessment that external factors beyond Nigeria's control contribute to economic headwinds. Critics have questioned whether Oyedele possesses the specific educational credentials required for managing complex economic reform, with opposition figures noting his background in fiscal policy committees rather than formal economic training.
