Oyetola Urges EU to Tackle Maritime Crimes in Gulf

Dr. Adegboyega Oyetola, the Governor of Osun State, called on the European Union to deepen collaboration in addressing illegal fishing and maritime crimes in the Gulf of Guinea.

During a meeting with a delegation from the EU, led by Ms. St.

Phani Vergniault, Oyetola highlighted the evolving security challenges in the region that necessitate a broader integrated response and strong international partnerships. The delegation was in Nigeria to evaluate the GOGIN II project, which aims to enhance maritime security coordination and information sharing across the Gulf of Guinea.

Oyetola reiterated Nigeria's firm commitment to the Yaoundé Architecture for Maritime Security, describing it as a vital platform for regional cooperation and intelligence exchange. He acknowledged the impact of improved information sharing systems on maritime stakeholders and stressed the need for sustained optimism in operational improvements.

Ms. Vergniault explained that the evaluation seeks to assess the program's performance and identify lessons to shape future maritime security initiatives.
