Oyo State to Enhance Mental Health Services Across 33 LGAs

The Oyo State Government is set to assess mental health services across its 33 local government areas and train frontline healthcare workers to identify mental health conditions, provide initial care, and refer patients for specialist treatment. This initiative was disclosed by the Commissioner for Health, Dr Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, at the 2026 World Mental Health Day celebration held at Ring Road State Hospital, Ibadan.
The assessment will involve the hospitals’ management board and the Oyo State Primary Health Care Board to identify underserved communities. Progress will be measured through indicators such as service availability, patient utilization, and healthcare worker training.
Ajetunmobi noted the establishment of psychiatric clinic services at General Hospital, Saki, as part of efforts to decentralize mental healthcare. She emphasized the importance of involving people with lived experience in planning services.
Professor Victor Lasebikan called for increased investment in mental health personnel and rehabilitation services. Mr Oyetunji Ayoola advocated for the involvement of individuals living with mental health conditions in designing interventions.
