Ozoro Festival Harassment Sparks National Outrage

The Ozoro Festival in Delta State recently became the center of national attention due to disturbing incidents of harassment and assault against women during the celebrations. Eyewitness accounts and videos shared on social media depicted chaotic scenes where women and girls were chased and assaulted, prompting widespread condemnation from the public and civil society organizations.

The Delta State Police Command, led by Commissioner Aina Adesola, confirmed the launch of an immediate investigation into the incidents, which occurred during the festival. The chief organizer, Omored Sundai, has been identified, and several suspects have been arrested.

Advocacy groups, including ActionAid Nigeria, emphasized the need for a national conversation on the safety and dignity of women in cultural spaces, arguing that no tradition justifies violence against women. They called on Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to demonstrate visible leadership in ensuring justice and implementing measures to prevent future occurrences.
