Pa Reuben Fasoranti, Afenifere Leader, Dies at 100 in Ondo
Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, the national leader of Afenifere, has died at age 100.
At approximately 4pm on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, national leader of the pan-Yoruba organisation Afenifere, passed away at his home in Akure, Ondo State. He had reached the age of 100.
His son, Dr Taiwo Fasoranti, who holds the position of Secretary to the Ondo State Government, confirmed his passing. Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State released an official statement acknowledging the death and characterising the late elder as a patriarch embodying wisdom, integrity and selfless service.
Fasoranti was born on May 11, 1926, in Uso within Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State. Throughout his career, he distinguished himself as both an educationist and politician devoted to Yoruba advancement and strengthening Nigeria's democratic foundations.
In addition to his educational work, he served as Commissioner for Finance during the period of the old Ondo State. His century encompassed pivotal moments across Nigeria's political and social development.
Condolences poured in from prominent national figures following his demise. In a formal message, President Bola Tinubu spoke of Fasoranti as an icon upholding principle and among the last surviving luminaries connected to Chief Obafemi Awolowo's progressive political tradition.
Tinubu recounted attending Fasoranti's residence in Akure during 2022, at which time he disclosed his intent to pursue the presidency. The elder offered supportive remarks regarding Tinubu's political trajectory.
The President underscored Fasoranti's considerable impact on Nigeria's advancement, democratic structures and cohesion as a nation. During a visit to offer condolences, Governor Aiyedatiwa heard from Dr Taiwo Fasoranti that his father had bequeathed a powerful legacy rooted in firmness, resilience and commitment to industrious endeavour.
Rather than embrace conventional mourning practices, the family decided to honour Fasoranti's accomplishments and life. SWAGA'23, a political organisation aligned with the administration, also issued a condolence message recognising Fasoranti's contributions to Nigeria's recorded history, sacrifice and devoted service.
