NIREC's Dr. Kwamkur Critiques Religious Leaders' Role

Dr. Kwamkur, a leader in the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC), voiced deep concerns regarding the misuse of religion by certain leaders to incite unrest and hatred, particularly during election periods in Nigeria. He noted that this is not a new phenomenon, as religion has historically influenced political decisions in the country.

Kwamkur emphasized that while NIREC and the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) advocate for religious tolerance, some self-proclaimed religious leaders engage in actions that promote division for personal gain. He referenced the violent aftermath of the 2011 general election and the ongoing challenges faced by respected leaders like the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, who has faced persecution for promoting unity.

Kwamkur condemned recent remarks by Sheikh Yahaya Jingri, who claimed Muslims dominate Nigeria and suggested that non-Muslims should leave. He asserted that the government shares responsibility for these issues, as some politicians exploit religious sentiments for their advantage.
