PenCom Launches Free Healthcare Scheme for Retirees

The National Pension Commission (PenCom) has initiated a pilot healthcare scheme known as Pencar, aimed at providing free healthcare services to retirees in Nigeria. This program is specifically designed for retirees aged 60 years and above who earn a monthly pension of less than N70,000.

The pilot phase will accommodate 30,000 eligible retirees, with registration open on a first-come, first-served basis. Eligible retirees are encouraged to register through the PenCom website or their Pension Fund Administrators (PFAs).

The initiative is part of PenCom's corporate social responsibility efforts to alleviate the financial burden of healthcare costs on retirees, particularly in light of rising medical bills and inflation that erodes purchasing power. Muhammad Ahmad, the Director General of PenCom, has been named chairman of the Pencar healthcare program, which aims to ensure that contributors to the pension scheme have access to quality healthcare services.
