Abati Warns NDC Against Becoming Refuge for Politicians

Reuben Abati, a former presidential aide, warned the National Democratic Congress (NDC) not to turn into a haven for "internally displaced politicians." His remarks came during a Tuesday appearance on Arise Television's morning show, where he discussed the implications of recent defections, particularly from Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso's parties. Abati noted that the NDC's membership has sharply increased from 9.4 million to 10 million, positioning it as a potential major opposition force ahead of the 2027 elections.

However, he cautioned that the influx of politicians could undermine the party's structural and ideological clarity. He emphasized the importance of the NDC engaging with the populace to ensure a basic contract with the Nigerian people, maintaining that the party must not lose sight of its foundational principles amidst the growing membership.
