Utomi Calls Obi's Party Switch a Strategic Move

Pat Utomi, a renowned scholar and economist, commented on Peter Obi's recent switch from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the New Democratic Congress (NDC), labeling it a wise escape from a political trap. Utomi criticized the internal democratic processes within Nigerian political parties, stating that they have become farcical.

He noted that Obi's move was a strategic decision to advocate for reform within the ADC but ultimately described the maneuver as undemocratic, aimed at blocking certain candidates from appearing on the ballot. Utomi emphasized the importance of a big tent coalition to address Nigeria's fragmented opposition ahead of the 2027 elections, contrasting Obi's alignment with Atiku Abubakar on different platforms.

He also criticized the current political class's obsession with power and the need for deep reform in leadership. Furthermore, Utomi discussed the introduction of a voter corps scheme to enhance electoral transparency and engagement among Nigerians, particularly in response to the economic performance of President Bola Tinubu's administration.
