Peter Obi Critiques Tinubu on Nigeria's Food Insecurity

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), criticized President Bola Tinubu's administration for the worsening food insecurity in Nigeria. Obi's remarks were made in a statement released on Thursday via his official X handle.

He highlighted that despite Tinubu's declaration of a food emergency in July 2023 and the acquisition of 2,000 tractors and 9,000 farm implements as part of Nigeria's largest agricultural mechanization program, the outcomes have been contrary to expectations. The country's hunger index has deteriorated, ranking 103rd out of 123 countries in the 2022-2023 survey and falling to 115th in the 2025-2026 survey.

Consequently, Nigeria is classified among the world's hungriest nations, with the World Bank forecasting that 33 million Nigerians will experience severe hunger. Obi emphasized that Nigeria has the potential to cultivate uncultivated land in the north, which could be a significant asset for achieving food security and creating employment.
