Pharma Leaders Urge Government Support for Local Manufacturing

During a press conference in Lagos ahead of the 8th Nigerian Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Expo (NPME) scheduled for September 28-29, 2026, pharmaceutical leaders, including John Sila and Mai Baker, called on the federal government to strengthen support for local drug manufacturing. They stressed the importance of improving infrastructure and funding policies to transform Nigeria into a major pharmaceutical manufacturing hub in Africa.

Baker, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Mai Baker Nigeria PLC, highlighted that the government must address critical infrastructure challenges, particularly concerning electricity supply and access to funding, which are hindering growth in the sector. The leaders noted that enhancing local manufacturing would not only support indigenous companies but also attract multinational pharmaceutical firms to establish production plants in Nigeria, thereby reducing the cost burden associated with importing finished products.

They urged the government to show greater interest in funding the industry to help Nigeria earn foreign exchange, create jobs, and strengthen its healthcare sector.
