Chidoka Urges Nigerian Pharma to Embrace Global Standards

Osita Chidoka, former Minister of Aviation, addressed the 29th annual conference of the National Association of Industrial Pharmacists of Nigeria (NAIP) held in Ilorin, urging Nigerian pharmaceutical manufacturers to pursue global standards. He emphasized the importance of abandoning excuses and embracing a new era of strategic quality excellence to achieve global competitiveness and safeguard national health security.

Chidoka highlighted the alarming costs of basic medications in Nigeria compared to international markets, noting that the Nigerian pharmaceutical industry relies heavily on imports for active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), estimated at 70-80%. He called for a psychological transformation within the industry to adapt to market realities and technological advancements.

Chidoka advised manufacturers to proactively prioritize data innovation and self-regulation rather than waiting for regulatory reforms. He stressed that quality should be viewed as a competitive advantage, and urged the industry to build systems capable of meeting global standards set by organizations like the World Health Organization and the U.S.
