PSN Warns Presidency on Pharmacy Law Changes Impact

The Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) has issued a warning to the Presidency regarding proposed amendments to pharmacy legislation that could threaten public health and disrupt the profession. Speaking at the 2026 PSN colloquium in Yola, Adamawa State, PSN President Ibrahim Tanko Ayuba stressed the urgent need for an independent Pharmacist Council of Nigeria (PCN) to maintain oversight and enforce discipline within the profession.

He highlighted that the proposed amendments could undermine the autonomy of pharmacy practice and expose Nigerians to unsafe practices by unlicensed operators. Ayuba noted that the historical foundation of pharmacy legislation in Nigeria dates back to 1878, with the current Pharmacist Act established in 1964.

He urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the National Assembly to halt the amendment bill, citing ongoing court cases that could prevent legislative action. Additionally, Ayuba commended Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri for his contributions to healthcare in Adamawa State, including the establishment of a modern laboratory complex and plans for a centenary endowment fund to promote pharmaceutical education.
