NSIB Investigates Arik Air's Flight Diversion for Engine Issue

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) is conducting an investigation into Arik Air's Lagos-Port Harcourt flight diversion to Benin after abnormal engine indications were detected mid-flight. The Boeing 737-7GL aircraft with registration 5N-MJF was operating a scheduled domestic service when the crew noticed irregular engine readings during the cruise phase.

Following standard aviation safety procedures, the pilot performed a precautionary engine shutdown and diverted to the nearest suitable airport, Benin, where the aircraft landed safely without incident. Passengers and crew disembarked normally, with no injuries reported.

Initial inspections at various airports revealed significant damage affecting the engine, prompting a formal investigation by NSIB in line with international safety standards. NSIB has dispatched a team to Benin to secure the aircraft, gather evidence, interview crew members, retrieve flight data records, and determine the sequence of events and contributing factors.

The bureau is collaborating closely with the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Arik Air, and other relevant stakeholders. A preliminary report is expected within 30 days, with the final report to be released upon conclusion of the investigation, emphasizing safety as the top priority for passengers, crew, and the public.
