Arik Air Diverts Lagos-Port Harcourt Flight to Benin Due to Engine Issue

Arik Air's Boeing 737-700 flight W3 740 from Lagos to Port Harcourt was diverted to Benin on Wednesday after an engine issue mid-air. The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) confirmed that abnormal indications on the aircraft's engine during the cruise phase led to a precautionary shutdown and diversion to the nearest suitable airport in line with safety protocols.

The aircraft, registered as 5N-MJF, experienced abnormal engine readings en route to Port Harcourt, prompting the pilot to shut down the affected engine and safely land in Benin. Passengers and crew disembarked without injuries, and a preliminary inspection revealed no substantial damage to the engine.

The NSIB has launched a formal investigation, deploying a preliminary assessment team to Benin to secure the aircraft, collect evidence, and interview the crew. The investigation aims to determine the sequence of events, contributing factors, procedures, mechanical issues, and potential causes of the engine anomaly.
