Pinnick Declines NFF Return as Federation Grapples with Mass Leadership Exodus
Former NFF President Amaju Pinnick has rejected offers to lead a proposed transitional committee, as Ibrahim Gusau and senior officials step down.
Following the August 27 resignations of President Ibrahim Gusau and several members of its Executive Committee, the Nigeria Football Federation confronts a significant institutional leadership crisis. These departures have prompted consideration of establishing a normalization committee to shepherd the federation through transition, with reports indicating that certain quarters have approached former leadership figures about helming such an entity.
Former NFF President Amaju Pinnick (2014–2022) has made clear his unwillingness to assume leadership of any transitional body or to pursue the presidency after such a committee completes its work. When asked directly, Pinnick stated his conviction that Nigeria benefits from an abundance of capable individuals equipped to address the federation's challenges.
His ongoing role as Deputy Chair of FIFA's Men's Competitions Committee and his position serving as Presidential Adviser to the CAF President informed his decision, alongside his commitment to pursuing business opportunities. These resignations come amid sustained difficulties afflicting Nigerian football's competitive standing.
The Super Eagles' failure to reach the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the Super Falcons' inability to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup have both intensified scrutiny of how the federation operates. The Falcons' absence marks an unprecedented break in their World Cup participation record, which had remained unbroken since 1991, compounding disappointment across Nigeria's football community.
