Urgent Call for Action on Oyo School Kidnappings

Adeola Ogunlad, team lead of Youth Advocates for Change (YAFAC), voiced deep concern regarding the ongoing captivity of schoolchildren and teachers abducted in Oyo State. This incident, which occurred two weeks ago, has raised alarms about the increasing insecurity threatening educational access across Nigeria.

Ogunlad described the politicization of the kidnapping as dangerous and unacceptable, emphasizing that schools should be safe environments for learning and development, not places of fear. The abduction of 47 individuals, including schoolchildren and teachers, has prompted calls for urgent government intervention to enhance security measures.

Ogunlad highlighted the negative impact of such kidnappings on parents' willingness to send their children to school, contributing to Nigeria's already high number of out-of-school children. He urged the federal government to review and strengthen the Safe School Initiative to ensure adequate protection for schools, especially in vulnerable communities, stressing that the safety of educational institutions is critical for the nation's future.
