Experts Warn of Political Interference in Abuja's Town Planning, Call for Stricter Enforcement

Experts in Nigeria have raised concerns about political interference hindering town planning in Abuja, leading to the erosion of the city's original master plan and exacerbating environmental and infrastructure challenges. The Association of Town Planning Consultants of Nigeria (ATOPCON) has emphasized the need for strict enforcement of planning laws and the adoption of modern technologies to ensure orderly urban growth.

While praising the efforts of the FCT Ministry in reviving abandoned projects and improving road infrastructure, experts caution against the conversion of green areas for development, urging the protection of natural buffers and open spaces. The rise of slums and unaffordable housing for low-income earners is also highlighted as a consequence of poor planning practices.
