INEC Promises Credible 2027 Elections, Dismisses PVC Stockpiling

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has committed to conducting free, fair, and credible elections in 2027, ensuring that every valid vote counts. Dr Adejumo Peter, Head of Voter Education and Publicity for INEC in Kwara State, made this statement during a seminar in Ilorin organized by the Nigeria Union of Journalists.

He refuted the belief that politicians could influence election outcomes by stockpiling Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), stating that such tactics are now ineffective due to new measures preventing the misuse of PVCs. Peter urged politicians to focus on issue-based campaigns and avoid violence, emphasizing adherence to the Electoral Act.

Abdulfatai Atata, Head of INEC’s Legal Unit in Kwara State, described the amended Electoral Act as a significant milestone, introducing reforms to enhance transparency and internal party democracy while raising questions about campaign finance and election petitions. The success of these reforms will depend on effective implementation and judicial interpretation.
