INEC Launches Downloadable PVCs for 2027 Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced plans to introduce downloadable Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to enhance the electoral process in preparation for the 2027 general elections. INEC Chairman Professor Joash Amupitan disclosed this during a courtesy visit from Mallam Lanr Issa Onilu, Director General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), at INEC's headquarters in Abuja.

The downloadable PVC option aims to assist voters who have misplaced or damaged their cards, although it will not replace the physical card collection process. Amupitan noted that the initiative is part of a broader effort to modernize the electoral system, which includes allowing eligible citizens to complete voter registration online without visiting INEC offices for biometric capture.

The pilot for this technology was conducted during the Osun State governorship election in August. Amupitan emphasized the importance of voter education and collaboration with NOA to combat voter apathy and misinformation ahead of the elections.
