Pope Leo's Historic Visit to Spanish Prison Highlights Compassion

Pope Leo made his historic first papal visit to Brian 1 Penitentiary, located 40 kilometers (25 miles) from Barcelona, during a week-long tour in Spain. He stressed that a person's past mistakes should not determine their future, highlighting the importance of making better decisions.

This visit marks a significant moment as he is the first American pope. During his tour, he also addressed the global crisis caused by escalating conflicts and called for greater compassion to protect migrants.

The pope's itinerary includes inaugurating the newest tower of the Sagrada Familia, designed by Antoni Gaudí, which will become the tallest church in the world. Earlier in April, Pope Leo visited a prison in Equatorial Guinea during a four-nation African tour, where he met inmates and pleaded for their freedom.

His predecessor, the late Pope Francis, was known for his commitment to prison ministry, having visited prison facilities in Rome just four days after recovering from double pneumonia.
