Vatican Hints at Possible Papal Visit to Nigeria

The Vatican has indicated a possible visit by Pope Leo XIV to Nigeria, aimed at reinforcing the longstanding relationship between the Holy See and Nigeria, which has Africa's largest Catholic population. Cardinal Carlo Maria Gallagher, the Vatican's Secretary for Relations with States, spoke with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, stating that the possibility of a papal visit remains open, despite no formal plans being made.

The Holy See maintains a continuous diplomatic presence in Nigeria, with the Apostolic Nuncio recalling previous visits by Catholic Church leaders. Gallagher expressed optimism about Pope Leo XIV visiting Nigeria in the future, especially as the Pope is expected to be elected in May 2025.

The Vatican's diplomatic relations with Nigeria began in 1976, and Nigeria established its permanent mission to the Vatican in 2012. Gallagher's remarks were part of discussions marking the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Nigeria and the Holy See.
