Nigeria's Nationwide Port Modernization Program Announced

The Federal Government of Nigeria, through Minister of Marine and Blue Economy Adegboyega Oyetola, reaffirmed its commitment to upgrading and modernizing ports across the country, not limited to Lagos. The initiative aims to strengthen maritime infrastructure nationwide, addressing concerns about focusing solely on Lagos ports.

The modernization program includes the Warri, Port Harcourt, and Calabar ports, in addition to previously approved upgrades for Apapa and Tin Island ports. The government has also approved the development of new deep seaports in Bayelsa, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Ondo states, which will expand Nigeria's maritime capacity and decongest existing ports.

This initiative aligns with the broader economic diversification strategy of the federal government, aiming to stimulate trade and attract investments. Furthermore, the government is making significant progress towards establishing a national shipping carrier to reduce reliance on foreign shipping lines and enhance local maritime participation.
