FG Clarifies Nationwide Port Modernization Program Details

The Federal Government of Nigeria, represented by Dr. Adegboyega Oyetola, clarified its nationwide port modernization program initiative, dismissing concerns that it would focus exclusively on Lagos.

During a ministerial retreat in Lagos, Oyetola emphasized that the modernization efforts encompass ports in Warri, Port Harcourt, and Calabar, alongside the approved upgrades for Apapa and Tin Island ports. He stated that the procurement process is already underway and highlighted that the modernization initiative is part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration's broader economic diversification agenda.

This initiative aims to enhance port efficiency, reduce vessel turnaround time, and improve cargo handling capacity. Additionally, Oyetola revealed that the government has approved the development of new deep seaports in Bayelsa, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Ondo State, which will expand Nigeria's maritime capacity, decongest existing ports, and open new economic corridors.

The initiative is expected to stimulate trade, reduce business costs, and attract investments across multiple sectors.
