Atiku Accuses Tinubu Administration of Rising Debt Crisis

Atiku Abubakar, the former Vice President of Nigeria and presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has accused President Bola Tinubu's administration of unchecked borrowing, which he claims has led to increased poverty levels among Nigerians. In a statement released by his media office on Sunday, Atiku called for accountability from the Tinubu-led All Progressives Congress (APC) government regarding the country's rising debt profile.

He specifically criticized the government's handling of a $5 billion facility from First Abu Dhabi Bank, emphasizing the need for transparency in loan agreements. Since taking office on May 29, 2023, the Tinubu administration has reportedly added N72 trillion in new debt, raising the total debt to N159.35 trillion by early 2026.

Atiku noted that poverty levels have risen from 56% in 2023 to between 61% and 63%, affecting over 140 million citizens. He urged Nigerians to demand explanations for loans taken on their behalf, highlighting concerns raised by the International Monetary Fund and Fitch Ratings regarding debt sustainability.
