EPL Announces Historic 16-Day International Break

The English Premier League (EPL) is set for its longest international break in history, lasting 16 days, beginning after Matchweek 5 on September 20 and resuming on October 10 for Matchweek 6. This unprecedented break results from FIFA merging the traditional September and October international windows into one extended period from September 21 to October 6.

During this time, national teams will play four matches instead of the usual two. The Premier League stated that this new calendar aims to reduce the frequency of long-distance travel for players representing their countries, thereby minimizing disruptions in the league schedule.

The changes were unanimously approved by the FIFA Council in 2023, with player welfare being a significant consideration. Previously, there were four nine-day international breaks during the season, but this season's merged break will feel longer for clubs as players will return from international duty before playing for their clubs the following weekend.

The next international break will occur from November 9 to 17.
