Presidency, Edo APC hit back at Amaechi over Tinubu voter remarks

Rotimi Amaechi faces criticism from the Presidency and Edo APC after calling Tinubu supporters irrational at an ADC campaign event in Benin City.

Former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi has drawn criticism from both the Presidency and Edo State's All Progressives Congress chapter over derogatory comments directed at supporters of President Bola Tinubu. The ADC vice-presidential nominee for 2027 delivered these remarks during Thursday's town hall gathering in Benin City, where he urged citizens to oppose Tinubu's bid for re-election.

During the ADC event, which brought together party leaders, candidates and grassroots members, Amaechi portrayed potential voters for Tinubu using unflattering language. He additionally contended that campaigning on behalf of the sitting president would indicate moral bankruptcy.

These statements sought to persuade Edo residents away from supporting Tinubu when ballots are cast next year. Government authorities challenged Amaechi's credibility and past performance in electoral contests.

They maintained that his involvement represents a liability to the opposition movement led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. Peter Uwadiae-Igbinigie, speaking for the Edo APC, rejected the premise that local voters require such denigration, asserting instead that Edo State citizens possess the capacity to form independent political judgments.

This confrontation illustrates deepening discord between the governing APC and the rival ADC as campaigns accelerate toward the 2027 presidential race. Edo, functioning as a crucial political arena, occupies central importance for competing factions.

The dispute highlights the intensity of campaign language spreading from those seeking power, demonstrating their determination to persuade electorates to shift away from the current administration.
