No Plans to Increase Electricity Tariffs, Presidency Confirms

The presidency clarified that there are no plans to increase electricity tariffs for any category of grid-connected customers. This statement was made by Sadiq Wanka, the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Power Infrastructure, in Abuja.

Wanka described reports suggesting a tariff increase as a misrepresentation. He reaffirmed the tariff policy direction outlined in the National Integrated Electricity Policy (NIEP), finalized in December 2024 and approved by the Federal Executive Council in May 2025.

The policy aims for a gradual transition to cost-reflective tariffs, already implemented for Band A electricity consumers. However, Wanka noted that there are no plans to remove subsidies for other service bands.

The government is exploring efficient ways to support electricity consumers, including the Power Consumer Assistance Fund (PCAF) established by the Electricity Act 2023. This fund aims to deliver targeted subsidies to vulnerable consumers.
